Electric Cars on the Rise During the Pandemic

INTERNATIONAL: The global changes in lifestyle brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic have also impacted the demand for electric cars. Its purchase increased 100 percent during 2021 compared to 2020. The boom occurs despite the shortage of computer chips.

Electric vehicles accounted for 6.3 percent of global vehicle sales in 2021, tripling their market share since 2019, before the coronavirus pandemic.

Global sales of battery electric vehicles rose to 4.5 million last year, up from 2.1 million in 2020, according to data from consultancy LMC automotive.

Yet global passenger car sales remain depressed, with just under 72 million leaving dealerships worldwide after the pandemic triggered a computer chip shortage that forced many automakers to temporarily close plants. . In 2019, more than 80 million passenger vehicles were sold.

The director of global powertrain at LMC automotive, Al Bedwell , has said that the chip shortage "perversely helped" drive electric vehicle sales.

Certainly, in Europe and in China very often it was the new generation of electric vehicles that was prioritized, because they are the ones that were needed. Consumers wanted to buy electric vehicles and automakers needed to sell them to meet regulatory goals. Bedwell has added that it is an excellent opportunity for the industry to focus on electric vehicles.
